Autumn/Winter Budget Beauty

I did a post like this for summer, so I thought it was only right to do something similar for winter! I’ve chosen nine products that are great budget items to see you through the winter season in style, so enjoy…

1. Revlon Nail Polish in Vixen, £6.49

This nail varnish is probably my all time favourite ‘drug store’ purchase. Firstly, I absolutely love the colour. It’s a gorgeous autumnal plum which is perfect to take you from daytime and into the evening! I also think the quality of Revlon nail polishes is great. The consistency is always really smooth and lasts a good few days (with a top and base coat) before starting to chip. If you want something to ‘autumn’ up your beauty routine this is my top recommendation!

2. The Body Shop Vitamin E Cream, £12.00

Our skin always need a little TLC during the colder months, and layering up your moisturiser is the easiest and most affordable way to do this. I love this Body Shop vitamin E cream, firstly because it suits all skin types. Secondly, vitamin E is an antioxidant for the skin (so really helps to protect and repair), which also helps to slow the ageing process! Alongside this, the shea butter and aloe vera also combines to make it a really soothing cream on the skin. Whilst this is one of the higher priced products here, the good quality ingredients included really do make this great value for  money. Plus, all Body Shop products are vegan, natural and cruelty-free which makes investing in this brand even more worthwhile!

3. Burt’s Bees Lip Balm in Pomegranate, £3.69

This lip balm was featured in my summer beauty bargains as well because it’s just so great! In my opinion it’s the best lip balm out there. It’s super nourishing, has a gorgeous pink tint to it and most importantly, is friendly on the bank balance! This is the perfect accompaniment to your make up bag especially during the winter months when heating and cold weather causes your lips to dry up.

4. St. Ives Blemish Fighting Apricot Scrub, £4.00

This was the first face scrub I ever used and it still maintains it’s superpower status in my eyes. It’s gentle on sensitive skin yet really penetrates to uplift dead skin and remove impurities and at £4.00 it’s a steal. It’s oil free and has 100% natural exfoliants which is why it’s so amazing for your skin. Use this once a week, or twice if you feel your skin needs it, to help fight the combination of heating and cold air, and, those winter nights where you cake your face in make up to hide the fading tan!

5. The Body Shop Down To Earth Eye Shadow Quad in 54588, £15 (trust me, it’s worth that little bit more!)

My first ever eye shadow set was from The Body Shop. Does anyone remember when they came in a clear box with four small cubes? This blue colour palette is a winner for me because it compliments my skin tone (and makes my blue eyes pop), and is perfect for those Autumn nights out! You can build as dramatic a look as you wish for the nighttime with the darker colours or opt for a subtle shimmer during the day with the silver. The colours are really pigmented (especially when wetting the brush), and although this is the steepest product here, I really do think this is great value for money, as it will easily carry you into next year.

6. Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in Starry Eyed, £4.99

If you know me, you’ll know I love a plum lip, so I have hunted high and low for both budget and items to splurge on, and this Rimmel number has come top of my list for the budget end! I firstly absolutely love the colour (I compared it to a Burberry colour last year) because whilst it’s dark, it has a gorgeous warm undertone that makes it perfect for taking you from daytime to nighttime. As well as this, the quality is great. It’s nourishing, long lasting and doesn’t dry out my lips which is impressive even for an expensive lipstick! A big thumbs up all round for this product.

7. Rimmel Glitter Bomb Nail Polish in Mistletoe Mischief, £3.99

Everyone needs a bit of glitter in the build up to Christmas and this nail varnish is the perfect fit – it’s called Mistletoe Mischief which just says it all! I love a glitter polish because you can either use alone or over another colour; and, my personal favourite, I love to apply messily at the top of my nail to give an edge to the normal  all over glitter nail.

8. Superdrug Dead Sea Purifying Clay Mask, 99p

With the temperature dropping and heating being blasted out it’s no shock that our skin can tend to get a little clogged up with make up and sweat. This face mask is one of MY FAVOURITE cheaper alternatives to use to help unclog the pores (I’d say it’s the budget version of the Kiehls face mask which I’ve reviewed here). The clay helps to really dig deep and draw out those impurities, whilst the cool eucalyptus helps to soothe and nourish skin. My skin always feels refreshed after using this mask, and at £0.99 per packet, i think it’s a fantastic bargain buy.

9. Soap and Glory Hand Food, £6.00

This hand cream has featured in one of my reviews before, but I can’t leave it out! It’s the perfect formula for dry, neglected hands as the shea butter, macadamia oil and marshmallow extract (yum!) combine to create a lovely, nourishing formula that delves deep to soothe the skin. It also absorbs really well into the skin, so you don’t need to use much to see it working its magic!

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading and found some of these suggestions useful! I would actually recommend these products whether you’re on a budget or not, so let me know if you test any out!

Product Review: Lush Santa Lip Scrub

My lips have been really suffering recently due to cold mornings, heating and air con (why my office uses air con at this time of year I don’t know), as well as generally feeling run down. Not only were they feeling really dry, but they were unsightly and embarrassing, especially during meetings.

So, one evening after work I headed to Lush adamant that I wasn’t leaving without some miracle cure. To my relief I came across this amazing lip scrub which has significantly increased the feel and appearance of my lips.

I instantly fell in love firstly because this scrub is called ‘Santa’, clearly making it part of their Christmas range. It has this gorgeous smell that sings of Christmas, with aromas of cherries and dates Jumping out at you as you use it. It actually also smells a little like coca cola, which surprisingly is nice!

To use I literally take a finger tip full and gently apply in circular motions, focusing especially on those areas that need extra attention. I tend to do this for a few minutes before rinsing off with water. The shop assistant also told me it’s fine to lick off, which I haven’t done yet; but given how amazing it smells I can guarantee it tastes pretty delicious too.

It only took a day for me to notice a difference in the softness of my lips, so I can definitely recommend this for instant results. What’s great about this product is that it really isn’t harsh on your skin, as it almost dissolves when you use it. My only issue with this is that is leaves a faint red tinge behind. I’m not sure if that’s to do with the colour of the product, or that it had just given my skin an exfoliation. It did fade pretty quickly, but just to be safe I apply either before bed, or an hour or so before I know I have to go out.

I won’t be using this product everyday, but I definitely think a scrub once a week will be so beneficial in maintaining the condition by buffing away any dead skin.

I love to then follow this scrub with this lip balm by Kiehl’s. This product is so nourishing and really absorbs into your lips for when you need an intense treatment. Kiehl’s are great for giving out tester samples, so if you’re dubious about investing see if your local shop offers a sample size of this product!

I’m always looking for new ways to look after my lips during the winter, so would love to hear if you have any other suggestions!

Review: Neutrogena Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Scrub

I’m sorry for those of you out there who love this product, but I can’t say I do! I bought this in the hope that it would act as a gentle cleanser on my skin to help relive any clogged up pores. But unfortunately, I haven’t got the results I envisioned!

There are a couple of positives that I’ll share with you, but honestly I feel like my spots have worsened in the two days since I started using this product. I realise that a couple of days isn’t that long to trial a product; but, if you have easily reactive skin like mine, you’ll understand that sometimes persistence isn’t the best option!

What it says on the tin….

It’s designed for everyday use as the powerful MicroClear technology and exfoliating micro-beads unclog pores to clean deeply and help eliminate spots and blackheads. The refreshing scrub gently purifies the skin without over drying, while a wave of pink grapefruit uplifts the senses with a burst of invigorating freshness.

The Positives:

– It smells beautiful. The grapefruit in this product gives it such a lovely fresh smell that made the mornings more bearable.

– The price tag is very reasonable! Although it’s frustrating to spend money on something you’re unlikely to use again, at £4.99 I’m not overly bothered.

– It’s pink!! I know this may sound like an odd reason to like something, but it’s so rare to see a pink beauty product.

The Negatives:

– I immediately developed tiny spots on my nose, as well as increased oiliness on my T-zone. My skin seems to have reacted with this product, and I can really notice. Not only have I developed more spots, but there is a significant increase in oiliness. As a result I’ve began wearing more make up to try and cover up, which isn’t great in this muggy weather.

– The texture doesn’t feel nice. I prefer exfoliators that have a soothing creamy texture to them, with the individual beads easily distinguished. This wash on the other hand has the same fine consistency, which feels grainy, and actually similar to rubbing fine sand grains against my face.

I’ve heard stories of how good others have found this product, so I’d be really interested to hear anyone else’s thoughts! Unfortunately for my oily/sensitive/combination skin this was not a winner!

A Glory’us Scrub – Soap & Glory Flake Away

I love body scrubs, and if there’s one product I don’t travel without it’s this one from Soap & Glory!

For me, it’s one of those products that over the years I have continuously come back to. I’m one of those people that always searches for something better, and, like my perfume, I thought there must be something more effective out there. But for me there really isn’t! The texture is fantastic, as is the smell, and I love the fun packaging that all of their products come in! This body polish contains Shea butter, sweet almond oil, peach seed powder, sea salt and sugar. No wonder it smells so good!

I first began using this when I was a teenager to try and rid the spots on my back caused by factors such as hormones/product build up. Using this in the shower not only helped to diminish these unsightly spots and scars, but also left my skin feeling so, so soft! If you can bear it after using the scrub, turn your shower to freezing and stand under for a few seconds. This is fantastic for closing up your pores to prevent any unwanted product seeping in, and, leaves your skin feeling even more amazingly smooth. It also gives your hair a great shine!

The tub lasts me for a good couple of months, which is great, as I tend to use it every other day! If you’re using the scrub just to target dry skin, I’d recommend using only once or twice a week. However, if your worry is spots building up on your back or other areas of your body, there is no harm in using the product almost every day for a couple of weeks until they settle down! As long as you apply in gentle circular motions rather than vigorously, your skin should be fine. On the odd day though I think it’s good to give your skin a break and let it heal itself – it’s amazing how with a little bit of help it’ll do wonders!

They even stock this in a handy travel size, which I have ready for my trip this weekend. I would love if Soap & Glory developed the equivalent in a facial scrub, the effects would be Glory’us!

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend everyone!
